I’ve recently been treated to my baby boy’s first proper laugh and it’s safe to say that my heart has melted! It does sound a bit like a cough, but I’ve definitely heard other babies laugh like that so I’m still counting it!
Laughing together is the trade-off for never going anywhere alone, the endless loads of laundry, the poo under my fingernails, the sick all over my clothes, the wee up the wall and the 3am walks around the house wondering why he’s awake.
His laugh is my reward for the 40 sober weeks when he grew inside me, for the intense pain of labour and how my body is first and foremost a milk machine these days. That laugh makes me think maybe I’m getting some of this parenting stuff right. Seeing his face light up when I pull a funny face, tickle him or sing him a song is so precious. I’m sure the years will fly by and it won’t be long until he rolls his eyes when I crack a joke, so while my smile alone seems to set off his giggles I am going to treasure every moment!
In summary, it’s the best sound I have ever heard.
