The Battle of the Nap

One of my favourite parent bloggers has to be Dawn at Rhyming with Wine. I think it is SO clever how she writes all of her blog posts in rhyme and they have made me both laugh hysterically and cry. She’s a beautiful writer and I often read her posts aloud to B because they’re just so fabulous! (She’s also blooming lovely!) When she started her guest post series, Cheers!, I knew I had to try and write a rhyme so I could get in on the action. I’ve mentioned before that I write a lot of poetry but I’ve only recently started sharing it and it never usually rhymes. I was quite pleased that I managed to knock something up for Dawn’s blog. Without further ado…

The Battle of the Nap

I pop him in his cot with my fingers crossed
He looks up at me and giggles. I’ve lost.
I put on the mobile, refusing to give up
Walk away, and within seconds he’s stood up

This is our daily battle – he refuses to nap
I always give in and he sleeps on my lap
I just can’t listen to him wail and cry
I am all too aware that time really does fly

Soon he won’t want to sleep on me
My role as a bed will end eventually
I guess I’ll just embrace these snuggles
Enjoy the sleepy kisses and cuddles

But if anyone asks, this is what I’ll tell
He goes down brilliantly, naps so well
He’s got a great routine and loves his cot
He’s a fab sleeper, my little tot

Almost bald 7 month old (at the time) baby standing up in a cot with one hand on the bars and one waving. Wearing a blue long sleeve vest with a penguin on it. One hand is waving and his head is turned to the left and he's smiling. Behind the cot is a yellow wall with wall stickers of train carriages with animals in and flowers around them.
The nap dodger in action!
This poem was originally found here as part of Rhyming with Wine’s Cheers! series; go and read the entire blog because it’s bloody marvellous.

If anyone else has a nap dodger please share your story with me and make me feel better…

  1. My daughter decided she would not nap from about 9 months of age… to this day she will sleep through the night without a nap during the day – unless she’s at nursery! Lucky me with my little Duracell bunny 😂 fab post Hun x

  2. This is brilliant, and very clever. I take my hat off to anyone can write a rhyme or poetry! Well done you. Why is the nap so difficult, it’s like the baby is a ticking time bomb waiting to go off. But you’re right, one day they won’t want to sleep on you, so just enjoy this time. Thanks for linking up this week at #fortheloveofBLOG. Claire x

    1. Ah thanks Claire! I can’t normally rhyme so I was pretty chuffed with this one. Naps are a minefield aren’t they? We just had 5 days in center parcs and trying to time activities and meals around his naps proved to be a bit of a mission! You don’t want to get it wrong and end up with a miserable baby in the pool/restaurant. Thanks for having me! Ellen x

  3. Hah. Brilliant. So funny. Why do we feel the need to lie and pretend our babies are great sleepers? We all do it! I’m liking your attitude. Embrace those snuggles and sleepy kisses. The baby always wins that battle in our house too. Best to just succumb to defeat, eh? 🙂

      1. Ha no worries I always forget the hashtags 😂 I’m not sure why I lie about it, probably because I can’t be bothered to listen to someone telling me ‘this always works’ or ‘have you tried this?’ Haha! Yep the baby always wins the battle. Thanks so much for reading, Ellen

  4. Go you!! This is brilliant!! I really am envious of anyone who can write rhymes and poems-it’s just completely beyond me, and I’m always overwhelmed by the cleverness of those who can! I have been in your position times 2!! Both of my boys would only nap on me for the first 6 months, and for only 1/2 an hour at a time too!! I found it really hard with the first one, but was so used to it when we had the second, I didn’t even bother to try and do it any other way! When both of them got to 6 months, they both napped in their cots, for long periods! And now neither of them nap at all…! I’d quite like to have those days back again!!

    1. Ahh you are so kind!! Thank you so much. Oh bless them. Well TM is 10 months now and he’ll nap in the buggy but him napping in the cot is still very rare 😩 He will sleep for ages on me though, little monkey. And I do love the snuggles. Thanks for your lovely comment and for having me! Ellen x

  5. I think they all nap dodge from time to time! Mine is no exception. I gave up earlier today and he fell asleep when we went out. It was annoying but I love him so never mind! Thanks for linking up to #familyfun

  6. Oh the stories I could tell about how I forced my son to fall asleep on his own. Not proud of it but I had my reasons. I do feel you though. I did have that conflict with allowing myself to be his bed and still wanting him away from using it. Ah…motherhood! #familyfun.
